Sitting on the banks of the Swan River, UWA is the oldest university in Western Australia, the 6th oldest in Australia and is one of the most picturesque in Australia with its sandstone and terracotta buildings set amongst heritage-listed gardens.
In 2013 UWA celebrates its centenary, reflecting on its beginnings in 1913 when it opened its doors to 184 students. Today UWA has a student body of over 23,000 students from all corners of the globe.
UWA is the only Western Australian university to belong to the 'Group of Eight' – a coalition of the top research universities in Australia, and it is one of only two Australian universities to belong to the Worldwide Universities Network, a partnership of 18 research-led universities from Europe, North America, North Asia and Australia.
In 2010, The University of Western Australia became a foundation member of a new international network of high-quality universities across seven nations, known as the Matariki Network of Universities.
